Peacebuilding Dialogue and AfCFTA Training conducted in Dessie
In cooperation with Dessie Chamber of Commerce and the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce, the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) hosted a significant peacebuilding dialogue and AfCFTA training session, aimed at fostering cooperation and addressing regional challenges in Ethiopia. The event brought together key stakeholders from the Amhara, Tigray, and Afar regions to engage in meaningful discussions on promoting peace and rebuilding trade networks in the wake of conflict.
The event began with an opening speech by Mr. Mohammed Marye from Dessie Chamber of Commerce, who emphasized the chamber’s strong interest in future collaborations and efforts to support peacebuilding initiatives. Mr. Samuel Molalign, Mayor of Dessie city, followed by acknowledging CIPE’s role in fostering dialogue and peace in the region. He expressed his appreciation for the initiative and stressed the importance of continued efforts toward regional harmony.
Mr. Ahmed, Deputy Country Director of CIPE's East Africa Regional Office, provided participants with a brief history of CIPE’s work over the past 50 years, outlining the organization's long-standing commitment to promoting private sector development, democratic governance, and regional cooperation.
A key presentation was delivered by Mr. Mulugeta from Wollo University, Lij Eyasu Research Institute, who shared important research findings on the impact of conflict on trade routes. The presentation also explored potential strategies for recovering and revitalizing disrupted trade networks, highlighting the importance of collaboration across regional borders to ensure the sustainable flow of goods and services.
Throughout the day, participants raised various concerns about the challenges they face in rebuilding economic infrastructure, restoring trade routes, and promoting regional stability. They also discussed potential solutions, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between stakeholders at the local, regional, and national levels.
Mr. Yonas Endale from the Trade and Market Development Office reflected on the concerns raised by the participants and assured them that the government is aware of the ongoing issues and is committed to working closely with local chambers of commerce and other partners to address these challenges effectively.
The event concluded with a summary speech by Mr. Esmael Ali, Board Member of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce, who thanked CIPE for organizing the event and expressed gratitude to all participants for their contributions to the discussions. He emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation to ensure long-term peace and economic stability in the region.
In the afternoon, Mr. Ebrahim from CIPE led a detailed training session on the opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), highlighting how stakeholders can leverage the trade agreement to expand regional markets and boost economic growth. The session provided valuable insights into how businesses and regional governments can capitalize on the AfCFTA to strengthen trade relations and enhance economic integration across Africa.
